Now on to my origin story: I used to hate books.
They weren’t video games, and they weren’t TVs, so why bother? That’s how I used to think back in elementary school. One day, my best friend said he wanted to write a book. No real reason, it was just a child realizing all the potential that life held. Even though I hated books, I decided to follow in his tiny footsteps and write one too. He didn’t go through with his, but when I started writing mine, I found that I couldn’t stop.
I had a passion for writing, even back when I couldn’t spell “writing.”
That passion was amplified when it came time for me to move away from my original neighborhood. That meant a brand new school. Unfamiliar faces, pre-established relationships, and a whole lot of gossip. No, I didn’t look depressed because my dad died, how do these rumors even get started?
I was depressed because I was alone. Luckily, I found comfort in the very thing I shunned: books! Huge Harry Potter books that made my classmates think I was crazy.
I read each of those books multiple times, then I moved on to Percy Jackson, then Pendragon, and every book I read only filled me with inspiration for my own.
There was a period of time when I wasn’t writing much at all, but I’m happy to say that it’s over, and that it’ll never happen again. My late-night, heavy eyelid writing sessions are here to stay!
